Professor Richard Macrory appointed to Office for Environmental Protection Board

7 June 2021

The first non-executive members of the new Office for Environmental Protection have been announced today (Monday 7 June).

Professor Richard Macrory

Professor Richard Macrory (Emeritus Professor at UCL Laws and the UCL Centre for Law and the Environment) has been appointed to the Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) Board, with Dr Paul Leinster CBE, Professor Dan Laffoley and Julie Hill MBE.

They will join chair Dame Glenys Stacey in advising Government and holding public authorities to account for their implementation of environmental law.

The OEP will be established through the Environment Bill with the principal objective of contributing to environmental protection and the improvement of the natural environment. It will provide the necessary legal authority to implement long-term environmental governance.

Much of Professor Macrory’s research over the years has been concerned with various aspects of EU environmental law. Professor Macrory was also the first chair of UK Environmental Law Association (UKELA), and co-chaired UKELA’s Brexit Task Force in 2016-2018.
