Andrew McLean, PhD candidate and Teaching Fellow at UCL Laws, has received the Best Junior Paper Award at the Annual Conference of the Academic Society for Competition Law (ASCOLA).
Andrew’s paper, ‘A Financial Capitalism Perspective on Killer Acquisitions’, proposes a new legal test that could help control the mass acquisition of tech start-ups by Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft.
The paper arose out of his doctoral research project, ‘Competition Law in an Era of Financial Capitalism’, supervised by UCL Laws’ Professor Ioannis Lianos, Professor Marc Moore and Dr Deni Mantzari.
The ASCOLA Annual Conference is the showpiece event of the academic competition law calendar. Originally scheduled to take place at Universidade Católica in Porto, it was held online due to the coronavirus pandemic, with over 20 panels across three days.
