The scheme, which is open to UCL Laws LLB and LLM competition law students, is a joint initiative between Kyriakos Fountoukakos, Managing Partner at Herbert Smith Freehills (Brussels) and Visiting Lecturer at UCL Laws and Dr Deni Mantzari, Lecturer in Competition Law and Policy at UCL Laws and Acting Director of the UCL Centre for Law, Economics and Society. It aims to offer successful candidates the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in a leading global law firm for four weeks in June and July.

Emma is tremendously grateful for having been given this rare opportunity to gain an insight into competition law enforcement in the very heart of Europe. During the vacation scheme, she hopes to be involved in cases that enable her to apply some of her knowledge from studying competition law during her LLB at UCL Laws, as well as be inspired to which particular areas of competition law to explore in her future studies.

Konstantinos is particularly thrilled to participate at the Herbert Smith Freehills (Brussels) summer vacation scheme. After an academic year full of new knowledge in the area of EU & UK Competition Law, he is looking forward to putting this knowledge into practice and joining a leading competition practice it the heart of Europe. He anticipates getting involved with major global projects and working closely with the firm's competition law experts.

Deni Mantzari (UCL Laws) expressed her gratitude to Herbert Smith Freehills and Kyriakos Fountoukakos for this initiative: ‘There were many bright and motivated students in our competition law classes this year and competition for the scheme was intense. I am truly delighted that Emma and Konstantinos have been selected to join the firm over the summer months and I wish them all the very best with their future career.’
