Dr Ronan McCrea speaks to Human Rights Lawyers’ Association on ‘Faith Conscience and Human Rights’

Ronan McCrea, Senior Lecturer in Law at UCL Faculty of Laws, spoke to the Human Rights Lawyers’ Association on the topic of “Faith Conscience and Human Rights” at The Bingham Room Gray’s Inn on Monday 30 October 2017.

McCrea’s talk focused on the limitations and difficulties of using human rights and human rights litigation in relation to issues of religion, state and law. He argued that human rights rhetoric and litigation can push people into seeking to turn very complicated moral grey areas into simplistic tales of an oppressor and the oppressed.

In relation to religion and law, the roles of oppressor and oppressed are often unclear and talking to each other and seeking structures that are fair to all is a more promising method of achieving sustainable outcomes than recourse to the courts.
