Scholarship received: UCL Laws LLB Opportunity Scholarship
Why did you choose to apply to study at UCL Laws?
I felt that the standard of teaching offered at UCL laws was of a standard that could not be matched by most other law schools. In addition to this the twealth of opportunities available through being part of UCL laws such as the career open days offer an unrivalled chance to leave University with a clear idea of where you want to go and an excellent chance of succeeding in getting there.
What are your favourite things about studying at UCL Laws?
The people I have met through studying law at UCL is something I am most thankful for. From the friends I have made through my course to the law faculty who have made me feel supported and welcomed since joining the law school. I also really like the number of events and things to get involved in such as the debating competition as I feel that, even in the short time I have been here, my confidence has grown exponentially
What do you hope to do once your studies are complete?
Currently I am in the process of applying for a couple of internships varying from corporate law firms to the Civil Service to help me ascertain what kind of career I’d most enjoy and be most suited to.
What impact has receiving this scholarship had for you?
This scholarship has given me the chance to pursue other interests alongside my degree such as the debating competition as it has meant I do not have to dedicate as much time to part-time employment meaning I have had more time to dedicate to these activities. I also feel that it has had an extremely positive impact on my mental health as it has helped to alleviate a lot of stress, I would otherwise have had making me more able to make friends and excel in my degree.
If you hadn’t received this scholarship what do you think your plans would be?
If I had not received this scholarship, I probably would not be applying to summer internships as I would need to ensure I had the security of full-time work during the summer to be able to fund living and studying in London. This would have a clear impact on my career prospects in the future, so I am grateful that this is no longer the case.
In addition to this I would have to be working as many hours as possible during term-time to be able to afford to study in London meaning that I would probably be struggling to keep up with my studies and to maintain friendships. Overall the scholarship has meant that I can make the most of my time at UCL Laws ensuring that I leave with the best education possible and having thoroughly enjoyed my time here.
How did you hear about the UCL Laws scholarships?
Through an email from the Law department who really did an excellent job informing me of what help was available.
If someone was thinking of applying for a scholarship what would you say to them?
I would tell them to definitely go for it. At the end of the day the University want to know how they can help you during your time there so if you feel like you would benefit from a scholarship then use the application to explain why you would to them. There is nothing to lose.
If someone was thinking of funding a scholarship what would you say to them?
I would encourage them to do so as the impact this scholarship has had on me is life-changing. Coming from the care system and then living independently meant that I was in a position of little financial security and this was a concern that impacted me on a daily basis. Having this scholarship has massively improved that and has meant that I don’t have to worry about things like where the next meal is coming from. Deciding to come to University, especially in London, for students from backgrounds such as mine is a difficult decision to make and scholarships help to encourage them not only to come but also that they can belong at University as much as everyone else.
