This term, IBIL welcomes two new UCL Laws PhD scholarship students to the Institute, both undertaking important research in the field of intellectual property law.

This month, IBIL has been joined by two new Research Assistants, April Wells and James Hall, both recent UCL Laws graduates.

Felipe Osorio Umaña passes his PhD Viva

Last month, UCL IBIL held its 17th Annual Sir Hugh Laddie Lecture, held in commemoration of the Centre’s founder. This year, the lecture was delivered by The Rt Hon. Professor Sir Christopher Floyd on the topic of patent harmonisation.

UCL Honorary Professor of Practice, Mark Anderson, has contributed to a newly published article and webcast which highlights some of the complexities when contracting with universities.

IBIL colleagues have been recognised in the 2025 UCL Education Awards, with the winners announced at a ceremony held on 4 June 2025. These awards celebrate staff who make outstanding contributions to the learning experience and success of UCL students.

Last week, the UCL Institute of Brand and Innovation Law (IBIL) hosted a conference unveiling the results from a comprehensive examination of intellectual property (IP) and commercialisation policies from across 138 universities in England.

Dr Alina Trapova was invited to present her research on copyright law and AI at the Spring Conference, organised by the Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Law (CIPIL), and held at the University of Cambridge on 29 March 2025.
