About this event
- Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes
Talk Description: Borders are where state-sponsored industries of carceral and military technologies confront and contain people pursuing better tomorrows. In The Cost of Borders, Gowayed unravels this confrontation by centering the experiences of the people most affected. Moving from Lesbos, to Gaza, to Tijuana, she examines borders, not as static markers of sovereign territories as they are often cast, but as a series of transactions that are always costly and often deadly. She shows how the costs of borders, patterned by inequalities of racism, sexism, and disability, fluctuate over time and space, and differ depending on who is attempting to cross.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Heba Gowayed is a writer and sociologist. She is an Associate Professor of Sociology at CUNY Hunter College & Graduate Center. Her research and writing centers the lives of people who migrate across borders and the unequal and often violent institutions they face.
