Reinsurance book
Reinsurance law is the éminence gris behind global risk transfer that underpins commercial activities. ‘The Law of Reinsurance’ navigates the complexities of reinsurance law in England and Bermuda. Terry O'Neill
Terry O’Neill
Terry O’Neill joined Clifford Chance in 1977 and, after many years as Head of Insurance and Reinsurance Litigation at the firm, is a consultant. He undertakes contentious and non-contentious insurance, reinsurance, Lloyd's and financial reinsurance and was the original co-author (with Jan Woloniecki) of "The Law of Reinsurance" and has been an editor / author of all subsequent editions.

 

Franziska Arnold-Dwyer
Franziska Arnold-Dwyer
Franziska Arnold-Dwyer is an Associate Professor of Law at UCL's Faculty of Laws.Her research interests are re/insurance law and re/insurance solutions. In particular, she is interested in the intersection and interaction of insurance contract law, regulation, and soft law standards, and, in the context of sustainability and climate change, how insurers can act as enablers with insurance solutions that make a positive contribution to achieving the UN SDGs and the global fight against climate change. She was an observer at COP27 and COP28. Prior to joining UCL, Franziska was a Reader, and the Director of the Insurance, Shipping & Aviation Law Institute, at QMUL. She is a qualified solicitor (England and Wales) and, before returning to academia, she practised law in the Litigation & Dispute Resolution Department at Clifford Chance as well as completing client secondments at Citibank and Credit Suisse. Franziska is the executive editor and chapter author of ‘The Law of Reinsurance and England and Bermuda’ (4th and 5th edition; 6th edition forthcoming; Sweet & Maxwell) and one of the editors of the next edition of leading textbook ‘MacGillivray on Insurance Law’ (16th edition forthcoming; Sweet & Maxwell). Her book ‘Insurable Interest and the Law’ (Routledge, 2020) won the BILA Book Prize. Her book 'Insurance, Climate Change and the Law’ (Routledge, 2024) - the first in-depth analysis of how the insurance contractual framework can be leveraged to advance the energy transition and to foster resilience to adverse climate impacts - won an InsuranceERM Climate Risk and Sustainability Award for research of the year 2024. Her papers have been published in the Modern Law Review, the Lloyd’s Maritime and Commercial Law Quarterly, and the Connecticut Insurance Law Journal. She is a contributing author to Lexis and Westlaw on insurance law. She is the Deputy Editor of the British Insurance Law Association (BILA) Journal.

Rod Attride-Stirling
Rod Attride-Stirling
Rod is one of the founding partners of ASW Law. He has over 30 years’ experience of practice as a Barrister and Attorney of Bermuda, and he is a seasoned international arbitration practitioner. In addition to his extensive commercial advocacy experience, Rod is an Acting Justice of the Supreme Court of Bermuda. Rod is the Chairman of the Bermuda Insurance Act Appeals Tribunal and a former Chairman of the Investment Business Act Appeals Tribunal (both official regulatory appeal bodies). He is the Chairman of the Insurance Advisory Committee, which advises the Bermuda Government on insurance matters, and a member of the U.S.A. – Bermuda Tax Convention Advisory Committee. Rod is a former President of the Bermuda Bar Association and the former Chairman of the Human Rights Commission. Rod is ranked by all of the major independent legal directories, with particular prominence in insurance and reinsurance work. He is ranked as an ‘elite thought leader’ by Who’s Who Legal, who describe him as a “top-drawer name in claims involving commercial insurers, brokers and managers.” Chambers and Partners note that he is rated “very highly indeed … incredibly knowledgeable, commercial and really fights for his client”.

Kehinde George
Kehinde George
Kehinde is one of the founding partners of ASW, and has practised as a Barrister and Attorney in Bermuda since 1996. She heads ASW's Restructuring & Insolvency department. Prior to this, Kehinde practised as a solicitor in England for ten years: three years as a corporate/commercial solicitor at both Stephenson Harwood and Turner Kenneth Brown; and four years for the UK government’s Department of Trade & Industry, advising on insolvency law and policy. Kehinde’s particular experience is in corporate restructuring and insolvency. She has advised liquidators, provisional liquidators, creditors, shareholders and regulators, in relation to numerous local and cross-border insolvencies and restructurings and schemes of arrangement. These include The Bermuda Fire & Marine Insurance Company Ltd, the Global Crossing Group, Northern Offshore Ltd, PEG Reinsurance Company Ltd, Hatteras Reinsurance Ltd, Saad Investments Company Ltd, Singularis Holdings Ltd, PDV Insurance Company Ltd, Noble Group Ltd and Seadrill Ltd, to name just some. Kehinde is ranked in all of the major independent legal directories. She is heralded a ‘global leader’ in insolvency, restructuring and re/insurance by Who’s Who Legal.

Andrew Horner
Neil Horner
Neil Horner is head of Corporate at ASW Law. Neil joined ASW Law in 2003, prior to which he worked for leading law firms in London, New York and Frankfurt. He is a qualified lawyer in Bermuda, England and New York. Neil has extensive experience working on large commercial, financing, corporate finance and corporate insurance transactions. Neil is ranked by all of the major international legal directories. Notably, he is top-ranked by Who’s Who Legal and considered a ‘thought leader’ in (re)insurance. He is also top-ranked by Chambers & Partners and is listed as a ‘Band 1’ practitioner across the board for corporate, financial services and (re)insurance. Likewise, The Legal 500 consider Neil a ‘leading individual’ in (re)insurance.

Tim Jenns
Tim Jenns
Tim joined 7KBW in October 2010. Before joining Chambers, Tim practised for 10 years as a solicitor and solicitor advocate in Clifford Chance LLP’s award-winning Capital Markets and Litigation departments in London. Prior to joining Clifford Chance, Tim was the Judge’s Clerk to the Chief Justice of New Zealand, Dame Sian Elias. Tim has extensive experience in cross-border commercial litigation and arbitration as a solicitor and barrister. Tim has appeared as sole counsel in the Dubai International Financial Centre Court, the Commercial Court, the Chancery Division, the County Court, in international arbitration and has appeared as Junior in the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.  His practice covers all areas of commercial law, including general commercial disputes, insurance and reinsurance, shipping and commodities, energy, civil fraud, banking and finance, jurisdiction/conflict of laws, professional negligence and discipline and sale of goods.

Cheng Li Yow
Cheng Li Yow
Cheng Li Yow is a parter at Clifford Chance and is part of the Financial Institutions Corporate Group. She specialises in financial institutions corporate transactions and insurance regulatory advice. Cheng Li has particular experience in banking and (re)insurance restructurings including through Part VII transfers and cross-border mergers, financial institutions M&A and joint ventures, reinsurance transactions and alternative risk transfer and distribution arrangements. She also provides insurance regulatory advice.

 

Andrew Tromans
Andrew Tromans
Andrew Tromans is a partner in the London office and a member of the Corporate & Financial Services Department of Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP. He advises insurance and financial institution clients – including life and non-life insurance companies – Lloyd's vehicles, brokers and other intermediaries on a broad range of company law matters, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, outsourcings and start-ups. Andrew has conducted a number of significant insurance business transfers under Part VII of FSMA 2000. His practice also includes advising on UK and EU financial services regulation focusing particularly on the insurance sector, policy wordings, FSA and EU regulatory matters (including the UK regulatory handbooks and the implementation of Solvency II), capital-raisings and the establishment of new insurance vehicles. He has particular experience in the life insurance market and has also advised on a number of significant transactions in relation to businesses at Lloyd's of London.
 
In addition to contributing the chapter on UK reinsurance regulation to O’Neill & Woloniecki on The Law of Reinsurance, Andrew is regulatory editor of the Encyclopaedia of Insurance Law.

He is ranked in Chambers UK (2025) for Insurance: Non-contentious, where a client previously cited his “excellent intellect” and “creative and commercial approach to the challenges.”  He is also recognised by The Legal 500 UK (2025) as a “Leading Partner” for Insurance: Corporate and Regulatory.
