Barrister, Matrix Chambers

The Bentham Association Presidential Address, on Law and the Class Ceiling, will be followed by dinner.

on Tuesday 17 May 2022

About the talk

The 100 - year anniversary of the Sex Disqualification Act 1919 last year has been both a cause for celebration and a time for reflection.   The underrepresentation of women in the senior ranks of the legal profession and in the judiciary in particular, has been the subject of much scholarly interest and of concern to many, practitioners included.  However, much less well explored is the significance of social class. In this lecture, Karon will address the question whether social class matters to the law at all and if so, how and why. In so doing, she will consider a number of Supreme Court cases most directly affecting the poor.

About the evening

UCL Laws alumni and UCL alumni now working in the legal profession have been meeting annually for the Bentham Association [formerly the Bentham Club] Presidential Address and Dinner since 1949. The evening includes a reception, the Presidential Address, and dinner and is a great opportunity to catch up with your friends from UCL and meet new people too. Be sure to tell us when you book who you would like to sit with at dinner and we will do our best to incorporate that into the dinner plan.

All the 0s
