PhD student Edward Pérez co-authors book chapter on extractivism.

Congratulations to PhD student member Edward Pérez, who has just co-authored a chapter with Par Engstrom (UCL’s Institute of the Americas) in the book Mounting Pressures on the Rule of Law: Governability for Development and Democracy in Latin America (edited by Jacqueline Behrend and Laurence Whitehead). The chapter, titled ‘Confronting Extractivism: The Inter-American Human Rights System and Indigenous Rights in Latin America’, explores the ways in which the Inter-American Human Rights System (IAHRS) has sought to balance protecting local communities, especially indigenous communities, with large-scale extractivism backed by governments. Through detailed case studies, the work illustrates how the IAHRS shapes natural resource governance across the Americas, including with regard to competing legal claims derived from international human rights law and international investment treaties.
