Rethinking Secularism
On 20 March 2025, GCDC member Professor Myriam Hunter-Henin participated in a panel discussion on ‘laïcité’ at LSE. The event, titled ‘Rethinking Secularism: Laïcité, Law, and Democracy’, explored the evolving concept of laïcité, focusing on its legal implications, political developments, and cultural impact in both France and Mediterranean countries. The discussion analysed how laïcité has shifted from a tool of religious neutrality to a contentious political instrument, with comparisons to secularism in other democracies. Also on the panel was Professor Philippe Marlière, Professor in French and European Politics at UCL. The event was chaired by Dr Fahad Rahman, Fellow at LSE.
