On 30 September 2024, GCDC Director Professor Erin Delaney participated in a roundtable on constitutional reform in Bangladesh. The event, organised by the Jagoron Foundation, was held to facilitate dialogue on constitutional issues and identify areas of reform to facilitate Bangladesh’s democratic consolidation.
Professor Delaney’s contribution centred on federalism, caretaker governments, and access to justice. She discussed how caretaker governments can be useful in maintaining constitutional order during periods of democratic transition, explored the potential for decentralisation of power through the adoption of federalism in Bangladesh, and emphasised the need for judicial reform to improve access to justice for Bangladeshi citizens.
Other participants at the event included Dr Shahdeen Malik (Bangladeshi Lawyer at the Supreme Court of Bangladesh), Professor Naomi Hossain (SOAS), Professor Jon Wilson (King’s College London), Professor Merris Amos (Queen Mary University of London), Dr Cynthia Farid (University of Hong Kong), Professor Tarun Khaitan (LSE), and Professor Renata Uitz (CEU Democracy Institute).
