Access to Justice Research Assistant
The Role:
Grade 6 (£14.72 per hour, inclusive of London Allowance)
As & when hours between 10 January 2018 and 15 April 2018.
Responsible to: Dr Catrina Denvir and Shiva Riahi, Head of Projects, UCL Centre for Access to Justice
Project: Civil Justice Council (CJC) Research Proposal on Assisted Digital Needs in the Justice System.
About the Project:
The Council would like to commission a small-scale study to assist HMCTS understand the needs of people who will require assistance as a result of court and tribunal services becoming largely digitised. The study would be largely desk research, encompassing socio-economic statistical data and analysing available research literature and material.
Research assistants will work closely with Dr Catrina Denvir to draft a short, concise, accessible report (perhaps limited to 25 pages) which would include (a) careful recommendations for wider reading (b) practical and accessible one-page summaries suitable for wide and day-to-day use within the reform programme (c) proposals for useful and practical forms of monitoring and evaluation in this area. The aim of the report is to inform HMCTS designers and reform planners around the needs of the digitally excluded.
Research Assistants are expected to spend roughly 30 hours on this project with the majority of work expected to be completed by 31 March 2018.
Person Specification:
Candidates are expected to have
- completed or be in the process of completing a first degree in law.
- a knowledge of access to justice and civil justice issues in the United Kingdom
- some experience of conducting empirical legal research is desirable
- familiarity with conducting literature reviews and using research databases such as Westlaw, LexisNexis
- familiarity with reference management systems e.g. Endnote, Mendeley is desired
- good Microsoft Office Skills
