Max Khadaroo-Finlow
What inspired you to choose the LLM at UCL, and what excites you most about studying here?
For me, it was the professors, extracurricular opportunities, and quality of teaching that led me to pursue my LLM at UCL. What excited me most when I joined was the opportunity to engage in debates on novel legal issues, and I have not been disappointed. The discussions are always interesting, and I continue to enjoy each one.
What does receiving the LLM Future Scholars Award mean to you personally and/or professionally?
Hearing that I was receiving the UCL200 LLM Future Scholars Award was one of the most memorable moments of my life, and it feels like recognition for years of hard work and perseverance. The award provides greater financial freedom, allowing me to engage fully in the wide range of academic and extracurricular activities that UCL has to offer. It is a life-changing opportunity that will help me achieve my professional goals in the future.
How did you hear about the scholarship, and how was the process of applying for it?
I heard about the scholarship on LinkedIn and, when researching my LLM options, it was clear that this was something I should apply for. The application process was similar to other competitive funding opportunities, consisting of an application form and written statement, followed by an interview for shortlisted candidates.
As a future scholar, what kind of impact do you hope to make in your field or in the wider community?
I hope to move into legal policy and help shape the future of AI regulation. As a future scholar, I aim for my work and ideas to reach a wider audience, helping me build recognition and influence in a competitive field. My goal is to positively contribute to this influential field and ensure a fair implementation of AI regulation.
How do you think this scholarship will support you and help you work towards these long-term goals?
The scholarship gives me the freedom to explore my academic interests more fully. Unlike before, I no longer need to work alongside my studies, which allows me to focus on research and engage with the many extracurricular opportunities available at UCL. This additional development will be invaluable later in my career.
What does being part of the UCL200 celebrations mean to you?
It is an honour to be part of such a massive milestone for a prestigious university, and it is something I will never forget. I look forward to seeing how the celebrations develop throughout the year, especially the light shows at the Wilkins Building in February!
If you could give one piece of advice to future scholarship applicants, what would it be?
Do not hesitate and just apply! Research thoroughly why you want to study an LLM at UCL, be yourself, and be honest.
If someone were considering supporting scholarships like yours, what would you say to them about the difference it makes?
I would say, if you can, please support these scholarships. It is difficult to quantify the difference they can make. The Future Scholars Award has unlocked a world of opportunities that would otherwise have been unavailable, and its impact has been genuinely life-changing.
