Academic writing

The UCL Academic Communication Centre and the Bartlett will be offering online support in academic communication and writing for MSc students. This support will enable you to communicate critically and confidently at postgraduate level, as well as help you to understand what is expected of you in your assignments.

Paraphrasing, summarising, citation & references

  • Why, when and how to integrate sources in academic writing
  • What is the difference between a summary and a paraphrase?
  • When and how to quote

Introductions & conclusions

  • How to establish the relevance of the topic
  • What should be included?
  • How should they be structured?

Formality, style and word choice

  • Formality for different types of writing
  • Achieving a more formal, objective writing style
  • Necessary dictionary skills to make more informed word choices
  • Editing and re-drafting
