Can Yildiz

Can Yildiz, UCL Pre-University Summer School student

Why did you choose to study the UCL Pre-University Summer School?

As I wanted to experience university life in London, I did some research and discovered UCL is one of the most prestigious universities in the UK. UCL also welcomes a high number international students, so I felt I would fit in.

On the path to becoming a global citizen, I thought this course would be most suitable because it requires a high intellectual level and gives you opportunities to develop yourself in many areas, such as communication skills, confidence and learning about London life.

What have been the highlights of the course and why?

Social

Visiting places in London, especially the London Eye, as I could see the view of London during the sunset. It was also great to see the architecture of London, all the historical buildings, from a different perspective other than on the ground.

Academic

Studying in the UCL laboratory was also most enjoyable. We had to work in a team of two people, but when we had an issue we could ask the laboratory assistants and they would tell us about the process.

We were able to use highly technical machines and learn about tools in the laboratory. The machines were more advanced than what we use at school, which made the work easier.

Other students

The other students were all friendly and everyone tried to improve themselves in many areas. They were all confident and open, so it was easy to chat with them.

What are the main differences between studying in your school and studying at UCL?

At my school, teachers mostly do monologue teaching and the students just listen; here you interact with the teachers more and ask questions whenever you want - the teachers won’t judge you. You can feel free to express your opinions.

At first, because the education system is different, there were a few problems such as learning how to participate more and interact with other students, but the teachers helped with the transition. You learn things better by doing, not just listening to the teacher.

What advice would you give to a student who wants to do the UCL Pre-university Summer School next year?

Don’t worry about making mistakes: people do not care if you make mistakes when speaking English; one of the teachers on the course told me to make mistakes with confidence.

Get a good night’s sleep: The course is active, busy and intellectual. You have a tight schedule and go to a lot of places - not only stay at UCL.
