UCL Centre for Languages & International Education (CLIE)

How to apply

This section explains how you can apply for the Pre-University Summer School, including the documents you will need to submit, application process and how to pay.

Application process

Applications are made directly to the UCL Centre for Languages & International Education, via our online application.

Entry onto UCL Pre-University Summer School for International High School Students is competitive. Please check the entry criteria (academic, English language requirements and age eligibility) before submitting your application.

Required application documents:

You will need the following to be considered for the Pre-University Summer School:

  • Fully completed application form - including personal statement section.
  • Your referee should address the following, where possible:
    • General suitability for the course
    • Previous academic achievement
    • Level of motivation
    • Ability to work in a group
    • Proficiency in speaking, writing, reading and listening in English
    • Ability to communicate with groups of people in English
  • Copies of school transcripts (current and previous year).
  • Evidence of English language level (IELTS or equivalent). If you do not have an English language qualification, but meet the other requirements, you are invited to apply and will be sent a test to evaluate your level of English

Paying tuition fees

If you are made an offer, you are required to pay the course fee in order to reserve your place. Places on the Pre-University Summer School are limited, therefore early applications are advised.

Course fees can be paid by credit or debit card on the UCL Online Store, or by bank transfer.  Full details of how to pay the fees will be sent with our formal offer.

Full refunds of course fees minus a £100 administration charge will be made in the event of formal visa refusals where a further visa application is not possible. Claims must be made in writing and be supported by the relevant Refusal of Entry Clearance letter. Other requests for refunds will be considered only in the event that a replacement can be found to take the applicant's place on the course.

Please note that pro rata refunds of tuition fees for students withdrawing from a course of study after the commencement of the course will not be considered.

Code of behaviour form

After you have confirmed your place on the UCL Pre-University Summer School, you will be sent a 'Code of Behaviour' form, which must be signed by both you and your parents, and returned to CLIE before you begin your course.

This form outlines our expectations in terms of student behaviour and also lists a number of important rules and regulations that we will expect you to follow.

Students not already in possession of a valid UK visa should make sure they apply for a Short-Term Study Visa. N.b. Standard Visitor Visas issued shortly before the course starts are not acceptable for the Pre-University Summer School, and students presenting this kind of visa on the first day of the course will not be permitted to attend. In this case, no refund of course fees will be possible.

Students aged 18 and over

If you will be aged 18 or over during the course you are not eligible for the UCL Pre-University Summer School for International High School Students. However, the UCL Summer/Spring English Course for International University Students offers an opportunity for students aged 18 and over, who are at university or just about to start, and non-native English speakers, to further develop their English language skills and explore the rich diversity of London through work in the classroom and guided educational visits.
