Icelandic Level 3

Prerequisite for entry

Basic knowledge of Icelandic (successful completion of Icelandic syllabus 2+ at UCL Centre for Languages & International Education or other comparable studies).

Term duration

10 x 2-hour classes.

Aims and objectives

The aim of the course is to help students to become more confident speakers of Icelandic using good basic knowledge of Icelandic to develop all four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing). Students should be starting to have a good command of the language in many common situations.  Students will keep working on declension, this time with a focus on adjectives.
Please note, the syllabus is subject to minor changes depending on each group´s needs and progress. 

Course content & Functions

  • Travel journaling - talking about a trip - On Thursday we went to a museum
  • How to talk about what you bring with you on a trip - I always bring my camera
  • How to talk about your mode of transport - I travelled by plane
  • How to talk about who you are with - I went with a friend
  • How to describe common objects in basic terms - I got a new, expensive camera
  • How to describe clothes - I am wearing a warm jacket
  • How to describe your iinterests - I have an interest in classic novels
  • How to describe cities - Reykjavík is a very interesting city

Linguistic structures/ Phonetics

  • Silent consonants in consonant clusters 
  • Deletion of -a, -i and -u vowels
  • Unstressed pronouns

Grammar

  • Verb conjugation review - present, past and present perfect
  • Noun declension review
  • The declension of adjectives
  • The preposition með + accusative
  • The preposition með + dative
  • The verb phrases að vera með and að fara með
  • að hafa - að eiga - að vera með
