Meet Any from Lima, Peru who joined us for the Summer English Course in 2024.
What country and town are you from and where do you study?
I’m from Lima, Peru and I'm in the last year in Business Administration and Marketing.
Peru is a multicultural country, it has one of the best gastronomies in the world, it is made up of a variety of landscapes, from mountains and beaches to deserts and rain forests.
Why did you choose to study the Summer English Course?
I was attracted by the length, schedule and activities of this course, and I wanted the experience of studying abroad, improving my English and losing the fear of communicating in a new language, and what better than in London, I love London, and in one of the best universities in the world.
I had heard about UCL before, but I chose UCL because of my cousin, she had taken a summer course there too, and she recommended this course to me.
What are the main differences between studying in your university and studying at UCL?
At UCL, the teachers gave us the opportunity to interact with our classmates in every class, exchange ideas, and share about our cultures. I think that is important, not only to learn English but to open your mind and your vision of the world. Personally, I like to learn something new about each country.
The teaching style was different from my university in my country, and it helped me improve my communication skills and learn about the history and culture of London in a dynamic way.
Do you have any personal highlights from the course and why?
I liked the research project because we were able to develop ourselves more in each interview and share opinions with our classmates.
My favorite view was of Tower Bridge, an iconic place. I loved reading about this place, the experience with my colleagues and the place is incredible, one of my favorites along with Big Ben.
Which skills have you developed during the course?
It helped me a lot to lose the fear of speaking English all the time. Communicating in English every day and learning something new from each classmate and from each class made me expand my vocabulary and improve my pronunciation.
The readings helped me with my reading comprehension, and I learned more about the history of the city.
Is there anything you enjoyed doing during your free time?
I liked London and the United Kingdom in general because it is a country with many immigrants and tourists from diverse cultures. I made friends from different countries when I went out in London or when I was in Salisbury and Scotland.
What advice would you give to future Summer English Course students?
At first I was afraid of not being able to communicate well in English, but from the first day I felt confident and was able to practice and make new friends.
I recommend the course if you want to improve your English skills, improve your speaking, interact with the country's culture, learn new vocabulary, and be able to better understand English readings.
