84% of CLIE foundation students progress to UCL or another top UK university

Despite a challenging year due to COVID-19, UPC students achieve excellent progression results.
84% of students who studied the Undergraduate Preparatory Certificate (UPC) – UCL’s International Foundation course – have progressed to their target degree at UCL or another leading UK university.
57% stayed on to study their undergraduate at UCL, an increase of 5% on last year’s results. Students progressed into 10 out of 11 UCL faculties, with Mathematics & Physical Sciences accepting the highest number. The next most popular destinations were Engineering Sciences and Social & Historical Sciences.
Another 27% of the cohort went on to study at other Russell Group universities, including Imperial College London and LSE.
These excellent results were achieved during a year of severe disruption due to the outbreak of COVID-19. All of the teaching delivery for term three, as well as all assessments, had to be moved online in response to the pandemic.
Rob Doswell, the UPC Education Advisor, was impressed with how well both the students and academic team coped in the face of adversity.
“UPC staff and students showed great determination to continue and complete the course despite such a drastic interruption. The already well-established relationships between them meant there was a great deal of good will, trust and solidarity on both sides.
The results and progression outcomes this year are a credit to the efforts of teachers and students, who worked so hard to take on the extraordinary challenges posed by the coronavirus context.”
Academic English Coordinator Martin Hall said: “The final results the students achieved in 2020 were as exceptional as the year. I speak for all UPC staff when I say that the students’ drive to succeed was truly outstanding. They achieved a set of results among the very best ever on the UPC.”
