CLIE Pre-sessional English teacher achieves HEA Fellowship

10 July 2019

Many congratulations to Laura Spadon, Pre-sessional English Teaching Fellow, who has been awarded a UCL Arena Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

HEA Fellowship is a nationally-recognised award for staff who can demonstrate successful experience of teaching, supervising, assessing and/or supporting students’ learning.

After reviewing the application process with members of the UCL Arena team at an Initial Guidance session in February 2019, Laura was inspired to submit her application three months later. The process helped her to assess her academic experience to date and engage with the HEA Professional Standards Framework of Areas of Activity, Core Knowledge and Professional Values.

Reflecting on her experience with UCL Arena and the Fellowship Scheme, Laura identified several key benefits:

"As well as giving me an excellent opportunity to meet with other UCL colleagues outside of CLIE and sharing teaching experiences, this process gave me some valuable time to reflect and take stock of my teaching practice and current pedagogic research.

It also clearly showed areas of strengths and areas I need to focus on in my future classroom activity, which provided me with an additional layer of awareness.

The feedback I received from UCL Arena colleagues was truly invaluable and I would recommend this to anyone who wants to assess their current practices with a view to engaging with meaningful professional development."
