Part-time Academic English Courses for Graduate Research Students

Part-time Academic English courses are available at UCL for PhD and other graduate research students who want to enhance their academic writing and oral communication skills.

Thesis Writing


Course overview

Option A

This option is for you if you are registered on an MPhil / PhD programme. The course helps you develop an awareness of the theory and conventions of academic writing, including how to sequence information into chapters within a PhD thesis, and how to approach writing specific sections, such as the literature review.

Option B

This option is for you if you have successfully passed your upgrade / transfer and have preferably completed Option A. The course aims to help you consolidate and extend your writing with exercises and feedback on improving structure and style.

Course duration and class size

Option A

Option A is a one-term course. It runs twice a week for two hours over eight and a half weeks.

Option B

Option B consists of five one-hour individual tutorials. The times are arranged between the tutor and students within a period of 12 months.

There is a maximum of 12 students in each class.

Pronunciation & Public Speaking


Course overview

This course is for you if you want to develop your skills and confidence for speaking to an audience. The classes will review the main elements of English pronunciation in the context of skills required to give effective presentations.

You will have the opportunity to be recorded giving presentations twice during the course in order to reflect and build on your presentation skills both during and after the course.

Course duration and class size

The one-term course is taught for two hours a week over nine weeks. You also have a 30-minute individual tutorial.

There is a maximum of 10 students in each class.

How to enrol


We will only be running Thesis Writing Option B in term 3. Applications are now open, however we are only accepting applications from students in receipt of Doctoral Skills Development Programme funding. The application deadline for funding is 30th April. 

Please note that places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis.
