Prerequisite for entry
Having completed level 1+ or equivalent.
Term duration
10 x 2-hour classes.
Progression
After 20 hours students may progress to level 2+
Aims and objectives
- to enable students further develop their skills (in listening, speaking, reading and writing) in Modern Greek in a variety of everyday situations;
- to further develop awareness of aspects of Greek culture within a European / global context.
A communicative method of teaching / learning is fostered, although aspects of grammar are covered as well. Students are aided to reflect on their learning skills and experiential / autonomous learning is encouraged, including the use of interactive ICT material.
Course content
Main topics/themes to be covered:
- habitual actions and daily routine
- hobbies and spare time activities
- public places and shops: asking and giving directions
- counting: using ordinal numbers
- ordering and paying for a drink or a meal in a restaurant etc...
- going to the supermarket
- asking for a permission
- giving simple excuses
Linguistic structures/ Phonetics
- verbs: present tense and simple imperative / active, reflexive and passive verbs / introduction to the continuous subjunctive and the continuous future tense / the verb υπάρχει / there is
- nouns: genders / singular and plural / nominative and accusative cases
- adjectives (singular and plural / concord with nouns)
- pronouns: demonstrative, interrogative etc...
- adverbs showing frequency and place
