Our Covid-19 research teams win UCLH Excellence award

7 October 2021

The teams across UCLH who led and delivered our Covid-19 research during the pandemic have been awarded the Contribution to World Class Research prize at the UCLH Celebrating Excellence awards.

UCLH Research award

Recipients of the award include staff at the UCLH Biomedical Research Centre, the Clinical Research Facility which incorporates the UCLH Vaccine Research Centre, the Joint Research Office, the research delivery staff deployed to support research on the front line, research support services in imaging, pharmacy, diagnostic laboratories, those who volunteered to be participants in Covid research, and the Research communications team who kept staff and the public informed about breakthroughs as they emerged.

The prize was awarded at a virtual awards ceremony, which included a special film remembering the staff we have sadly lost over the past year.

UCLH has been a key player in the research response to Covid-19. At the outbreak of the pandemic the UCLH Research Directorate refocused its work and resources on tackling the virus.

All existing trials were paused unless they were related to Covid-19, or where the treatment involved was essential for serious or life-threatening conditions.

Over the course of the pandemic over 100 Covid-19 studies were rapidly set up at UCLH, with key national and international initiatives led by UCLH and UCL. The UCLH research portfolio has included several vaccine trials and a number of national and world ‘firsts’.

As the pandemic recedes, UCLH is restarting trials that had previously been paused to ensure ground-breaking research continues and that all the input of patients into trials is not lost. Almost all research studies have now been restarted.
