UCL flies high in world university rankings

11 June 2021

UCL has been ranked second in the world for Human Biological Sciences and fifth in the world for Public Health in the 2021 Shanghai Rankings.

Shanghai Ranking, which is considered one of the leading international league tables, has been publishing Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by academic subjects since 2009.

The rankings analyse 4,000 universities and look at a collection of indicators, including measures of research productivity, research quality, the extent of international collaboration, research with top quality, and the highest academic recognition. UCL was fifth in the world for Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences and sixth globally for Medical Technology.

UCL has also climbed from tenth to eighth place in the 2022 World University Rankings – the world’s most-consulted international rankings.

The news comes after two analyses found that UCL is 7th in the world for its research output relating to Covid-19 in the first months of the pandemic.

A large proportion of the research output of UCL has been in clinical research where the close partnership between UCLH and UCL underpinned by the BRC has enabled insights from hospital clinics to drive clinical research at UCLH and beyond.
