In2science UK still supporting students in 2020

The in2science team has written to all its supporters including researchers signed up to host a student placement this summer reassuring them the organization remains open and will continue to support students this year. Any changes to summer plans will be communicated to researchers but hosts can opt to indicate their availability to host a placement during October half-term as an alternative to a summer placement.

The in2scienceUK scheme supports able students from low income backgrounds to gain firsthand experience of working in a lab. By offering students 2-week lab placements with the chance to work alongside scientists, the aim is to inspire and motivate them and to support them in their application to competitive research universities.

Students are mentored with the aim of improving their communication skills, interview techniques, personal statements and UCAS forms – support they may not necessarily receive at school or at home.

The scheme has a remarkable track record of success: 83% of students who take part in the scheme go on to university, with 54% going onto a top university.

The BRC was a founding funder of the programme, which started in 2010, and now funds 50 placements every year at UCL.
