Guidance published for researchers on how to comply with EU transparency requirements

18 March 2019

The JRO and UCL Data Protection Office have published joint guidance on how to comply with transparency requirements set out in the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Transparency is one of the key principles of the GDPR, and as a result ‘Data controllers’ – usually the study sponsor – have a duty to make all research participants aware of the data that the data controller holds on them. This requirement for transparency applies throughout the life of the dataset.

The guidance document lists all the information that study participants need to be given according to GDPR rules – even where personal data has been pseudonymised.

The document also explains that one of the best ways of complying with the requirements is for study and/or departmental websites to provide information about what data on which studies UCL is holding.

The JRO/UCL Data Protection Office guidance is aimed at Heads of Divisions, all Chief Investigators, Principal Investigators and Departmental Managers.
