Researchers and Hepatitis B vaccination

27 October 2016

Researchers are reminded of the requirement to be vaccinated against Hepatitis B before commencing any work using human tissue.

All human tissue, such as blood, blood products, urine, tissue and aerosols from these, are potentially infectious. People who work with human tissue in combination with needles, syringes and other sharp instruments are known to be at increased risk of exposure to blood borne viruses (BBVs).

A vaccine is available to protect against Hepatitis B infection but there are no vaccines available to protect against Hepatitis C or HIV. As a result, it is important that every effort is made by research staff and students to avoid accidental exposure to any infectious agent.

Researchers can liaise with UCL Occupational Health for vaccination or confirmation of immunity prior to starting laboratory work.
