Media coverage of ongoing studies - researchers warned to take care

14 March 2012

Researchers are reminded that they need to be careful of any media coverage of ongoing studies and that they should consult with their sponsor before agreeing to any coverage.

Media coverage of ongoing studies, especially of those which are still recruiting volunteers, raises ethical issues and could jeopardise the study. This is especially the case where the media want to interview a patient.

If researchers are approached by the media or if they wish to approach the media, they should contact the sponsor of the trial in the first instance. They should also contact the communications department of the trust whose patients are involved.

The Joint Research Office is currently drafting guidelines on contact with the media.
