Monty Mythen joins online debate on commercial research in the NHS

3 April 2012

Professor Monty Mythen last week joined a panel of experts including the Chief Medical Officer Dame Sally Davies to discuss the role of commercial trials in the NHS.

Professor Mythen, Director of Research and Development at UCLH and Director of the UCLH/UCL Research Support Centre, took part in the 2-hour live online debate on the Guardian Healthcare Network.

The discussion focused on how research could benefit patients and patient care, but also covered issues such as the reinvestment of income from commercial research, the use of patient data and the regulatory framework.

There was a general consensus among panellists and other participants that the NHS needs research and that research needs to be funded from different sources including industry.

As well as Dame Sally Davies, other participants included medical director of the British Heart Foundation Professor Peter Weissberg, GP and PCT programme director Dr Peter Brindle and chief executive of the NIHR Clinical Research Network Dr Jonathan Sheffield OBE.
