The UCL Centre for Global City Policing (CGCP) is delighted to announce the launch of its first small grants scheme. The aim is to fund small research projects, symposia or other activities oriented towards policing in a global city such as London. Funding for up to three projects – from £5,000 to £10,000 each – is available. The scheme is open to all, but is aimed especially at Early Career Researchers (ECRs). Research students are also eligible to apply.
Applications are currently open and will close at 5pm on the 22nd November 2024. Successful applicants will be notified by the 13th December 2024, and we expect activities to start soon after that date. Primary activity on the projects should be completed by 31st August 2025. Full criteria for applications are listed below.

Guidance for applications
- The project must be relevant to policing in London and/or another global city. A global city is one that is an important centre for international business, finance, culture, and politics, a major hub for economic activity, and a leading actor in international affairs. Global cities also tend to have a high degree of urbanization and are centres of innovation and technology. Examples of global cities include London, New York City, Singapore, Tokyo, and Hong Kong.
- The project should be related to the CGCP research priority areas, which are: violent crime; public trust and police legitimacy; and the use of technology in policing. We would also welcome applications related to organisational challenges and reform.
- The project should be led by a Principal Investigator based at a UK research institution but should also include the active involvement of at least 1 police or other partner agency (the latter could include local government, third sector organisations, and others).
- The scheme is open to all. However, all else equal preference will be given to applications from ECRs (those for whom less than five years has elapsed since the date of their PhD viva). Research students are also eligible to apply
- Project activity can include primary research, knowledge exchange, conferences or symposia.
- Applications should include a clear plan of expected outputs and for dissemination to inform policing.
- The grant will cover research expenses, including payment to research associates or assistants, costs associated with conferences or similar events, and travel and subsistence. It will not cover salary payments or buy outs for named researchers.
- Outputs should include a brief report (no more than 4 pages) to the CGCP, which will be published on our website.
