International Student Orientation Programme (ISOP) for Graduate Students - September 2015

ISOP will take place in the week commencing 21 September 2015. During this week, you will have the opportunity to complete your in-person enrolment, attend 'We Are All Global,' a full day of talks designed specifically for our new international students, and participate in a variety of social events organised by UCL Student Union (UCLU).

ISOP is a busy few days and you may decide you don't want to attend all of the social events – this is your choice and, although you are encouraged to attend, these are optional. It is however important that you attend your enrolment appointment and the 'We Are All Global' sessions on Sunday 27 September.

Enrolment – By appointment

UCL, Gower Street Campus

You will have selected your in-person enrolment appointment when completing online pre-enrolment. Please refer to your confirmation email for your appointment time. To avoid delays, it is important that you attend at the time and date specified.

Enrolment Centres will be based at UCL Gower Street Campus. An ISOP Welcome Desk will be located in the Front Quad from Saturday 19 September - Sunday 27 September. International Student Ambassadors will be based at the desk daily to answer your questions, share their experiences or just point you in the right direction!

‘We Are All Global’ – Sunday 27 September 2015

Logan Hall, 20 Bedford Way, WC1H 0AL
Please arrive by 9.30am

This full day of talks, organised by the International Student Support team, is designed to help make the transition into life in the UK and studying at UCL as smooth as possible. Click through the schedule below to find out about each session, each session is different and it is highly recommended that you attend all three.

You will receive an email with details about how to register to attend the talks. Only students that have registered to attend will be permitted entry on the day.

Official Welcome

The day will begin with an official welcome from Professor Anthony Smith, Vice-Provost (Education and Student Affairs), and a Question and Answer session with current UCL students. You will have the opportunity to hear about UCL's unique approach to teaching and learning, find out how academic English differs to 'Everyday English' and be given information on where to find support during your studies.

This is also an excellent opportunity to listen to and learn from current student's personal experiences.

Adapting to Life in the UK and Building Relationships in a Global University

It is quite normal when you first arrive in a new place to focus on the differences between yourself and the locals and to start lacking confidence, even in really simple everyday situations, such as asking for directions or starting a conversation with someone you don’t know. This session, delivered by a UK leading consultancy specialising in enhancing communication skills and building interpersonal relationships, will help you get a clearer understanding of communicating effectively across cultures and building positive relationships with new people, including UK students, other international students and staff at UCL.

Living in London

Representatives from the Metropolitan Police and the UCL Health Centre will provide you with guidance on staying safe and healthy during your time at UCL. You will also be given information about travelling in and around London and obtaining a student discount Oyster card. UCL Student Union (UCLU) will inform you about the social events on offer while you are at UCL and the assistance they provide to students. UCL Careers will also be on hand to tell you how they can help you write a CV, prepare for an interview and look for a job during and after you study at UCL.

ISOP Social Events

ISOP social events, organised by UCLU, are the perfect opportunity to meet other new international students and immerse yourself into life at UCLU. Social events are an optional part of ISOP, however we would encourage you to attend at least some of these events. For full details please visit UCLU's website.
