- What is eduroam?
eduroam is a JANET Roaming Service (JRS) that provides an infrastructure for a user to use their UCL credentials (e.g. ucxxzano@ucl.ac.uk) to access the Internet from UCL or any participating Institution. The instructions for connecting are the same regardless of location. However, it is recommended you (a) check eduroam works here at UCL and (b) check the JRS eduroam web site for details on the status of eduroam at participating institutions.
- How do I connect to eduroam?
eduroam is supported on any Wi-Fi enabled device. View our connection guides for instructions on how to set eduroam up on your device.
- How do I connect to eduroam at other institutions?
You use the same connection instructions and UCL userid and password at other Institutions as you do here at UCL. We (UCL) are currently at JRS Tier-2 - this allows the Institution to support either WPA/TKIP or WPA2/AES encryption (or both) - UCL supports both. Support at other Institutions may differ. It is therefore recommended you (a) check eduroam works here at UCL and (b) check the JRS eduroam web site for details on the status of eduroam at participating Institutions.
- I'm a visitor from another eduroam institution, how do I connect at UCL?
View our page on Staff or Students visiting UCL from other institutions using eduroam for information on this.
- How do I request coverage in other areas?
If there is a location which is not covered, please contact MyServices with the following information:
- Building, Floor(s), Room(s) which require coverage.
- Approximate capacity of area(s) which requires coverage.
- Contact details.
If it is a departmental area, please email your departmental computer representative. You can use the Computer Reps Tool at:
- Is there an eduroam wired service?
No, we are currently working on an eduroam Wired service which uses 802.1X authentication. This will be advertised when available.
- What is my IP Address?
Upon successful authentication, your IP address is automatically allocated (DHCP).
eduroam Internal
For Internal users (@ucl.ac.uk), a Private IP Address from 10.97.*.* or 10.98.*.* is allocated (where * is any number between 0 and 255). When accessing resources (e.g. Internet, Email, Cloud) your Private IP Address will be translated to a Public IP Address:
- 144.82.8.* or 144.82.9.* (where * is any number between 0 and 255)
eduroam External
For External users (not @ucl.ac.uk), a Private IP Address from 10.99.0.0 is allocated (where * is any number between 0 and 255). When accessing resources (e.g. Internet, Email, Cloud) your Private IP Address will be translated to a Public IP Address:
- 193.60.231.* (where * is any number between 0 and 255)
To determine your actual IP address you can either check your adapter configuration or type "My IP Address" in your web browser search engine. - How do I clear cached user credentials (shared PC)?
On a majority of platforms (e.g. Microsoft, Apple Mac) credentials are automatically cached for reuse. This is not ideal on shared PC's. The instructions below outline how to clear cached credentials.
- Microsoft Windows the following Microsoft article describes how to manually clear credentials. You can also create a VBS script to automate the process as highlighted in the article Support Microsoft»
- Apple Mac OS X, modify the eduroam 802.1x User Profile (Airport > Advanced... button > 802.1x tab) and tick Always prompt for password.
- Is eduroam traffic monitored?
All users of the network must be aware of and abide by the UCL Computing Regulations and the JANET Acceptable Use Policy » when connecting to any UCL Network. Traffic, per se, is not actively monitored. However, logging is in place to uniquely identify individual users if a breach of regulations is reported or malicious activity detected.
