UCL Halls WiFi - connecting your additional devices

A new service for students in UCL Halls. UCL Halls WiFi enables students to connect their devices externally to the internet. This network is restricted to registered devices only.

UCL provides the eduroam wireless service to all of its staff and students and additionally in Halls there is generally a wired connection port available.

eduroam is the primary wireless service for access to the UCL network and is the way students should connect to the internet wirelessly.

If you are not already connected to eduroam then do check our connection guides first

However, students wanting to connect additional devices are often unable to do so via eduroam. These devices might include streaming devices and Smart TVs, gaming technology and smart speakers.

ISD has launched a new service - UCL Halls WiFi - to enable these devices to be able to connect to the internet wirelessly.

Following a successful trial at UCL East the new service is now available in all UCL Halls of Residence.

The service will allow students to connect devices to UCL Halls Wi-Fi  giving connectivity to the internet only, segregated from the main UCL internal network. By default, no devices will be able to communicate with each other. Airplay is also enabled.

As both networks (eduroam and UCL Halls WiFi) will be available in Halls, students should check their primary devices (e.g. phones and laptops) remain connected to eduroam where possible, to ensure they are connected to UCL's IT services. UCL Halls WiFi is only for connecting additional devices that do not need to interact with the core UCL network applications.

Once the device/s has been added using the Device Provisioning Portal (instructions below), all devices will be centrally authenticated and managed based on MAC address.

Devices will be allowed to remain within the Guest repository for a maximum of six months. If the device has not authenticated during this time the central policy manager will automatically remove the device from the repository, an email will be sent 30 days in advance of expiry.

Access to the Self Device Provisioning Portal

No request to UCL IT Services is required to Access the Device Provisioning portal, simply enter your UCL user credentials to access.

All devices requiring access to the UCL Halls Connect Wi-Fi service are managed using the Self Device Provisioning portal.

Once the device/s is successfully registered, the device can access the UCL-Halls SSID using the PSK generated from the self-registration process above.

To register and manage your devices, please ensure your laptop or phone is connected to eduroam
