The Online Learning team supports UCL staff in the production of predominantly online degree programmes.
Getting your programme approved
All new programmes and modules must be submitted to and approved via the Programme and Module Approval and Amendment Framework (PMAP).
Course production pathway
To facilitate development of your course, we use a version of the ABC Learning Design approach, a method used across UCL and the sector as a whole. Our adapted version incorporates a series of activities organised on an course production pathway that spans planning, through to design, development, and launch.
The primary, concrete output from the design phase is the course design plan, or CDP. The CDP acts as a high-level storyboard for the weeks or sections, content, and activities of your course, and helps to ensure that:
- Materials are aligned with module learning outcomes
- There is consistency in the course design
- There are opportunities for feedback on design choices
- The development is efficient and maximises time and effort spent by all parties.
The pathway activities and associated time commitment from a member of our team for a 10-week module (15 credits) are broken down as follows:
Service | Description | Staff | Time |
---|---|---|---|
Pre-ABC meeting | Short introductory meeting to get more information about the course | Learning Designer (LD) | 1h |
ABC workshop 1 | Introduction to ABC learning types and conversational framework | LD | 1.5h |
ABC workshop 2 | Ways to employ supported learning technologies and gather existing resources | Learning Technologist (LT) | 1.5h |
ABC workshop 3 | Explanation of how the CDP works and help to plan the first week of content | LD | 2h |
CDP review | The course team will complete the CDP and return this to the LD for review and feedback, either in a meeting or in written form. | LD | 1.5h |
Bespoke training workshop | Training tailored to your experience level and requirements for your specific context, e.g. in certain tools or activities. | LT | Up to 4h |
Set up course template | We will adapt our existing Baseline course template as required. | LT | 8h |
Build and review of week/topic 1 | Help with content development. Once you have started to build the course, a Learning Designer or Content Developer will review one week of the course in the platform and provide feedback using our quality assurance documentation | LD / Content Developer (CD) | 4h |
Final (QA) review | Quality assurance review of the full course with feedback amendments to address prior to launch | LD / CD | 2h |
Post-launch review | Facilitated review of the experience to identify what’s gone well and any areas for improvement. We can also provide a framework for you to do this yourselves. | LD | 2h |
