FutureLearn

UCL is partnered with FutureLearn to offer short online courses across a variety of topics and to global audiences.

UCL is partnered with FutureLearn to offer short online courses. Many of these are massive open online courses (MOOCs) that are initially free to study with an optional paid upgrade, while others charge an upfront fee. UCL’s FutureLearn courses are fully online, typically reach large numbers of learners, and can be developed with varied rationale, e.g. to drive recruitment for an existing programme, as a means of engaging the public with research, or as CPD for professional practice.

UCL courses can be found on our partner page, with the full catalogue from institutions across the world available on the FutureLearn courses page

Access courses from UCL and other FutureLearn partners

UCL staff and students can currently benefit from free access to upgraded courses, including course assessments and digital Certificates of Achievement. For more information visit the FutureLearn Campus article

About the FutureLearn platform

FutureLearn believes that the best online courses are driven by narrative. They are sequences of opportunities, experiences, and content that guide learners through evaluation of their existing knowledge and encourage them to ask and answer questions as part of conversation.

The FutureLearn platform is based on this idea of 'social learning' and the four guiding principles which determine the development of all courses on the platform are:

  • Telling stories,
  • Provoking conversation,
  • Developing skills,
  • Celebrating progress.

Support for developing courses

The UCL Online Learning team can support UCL staff through the course development process. We act as a liaison between your team and FutureLearn, organising course proposals, learning design workshops, production timeline scheduling, quality assurance, and support with day-to-day tasks.

If you are interested in developing a FutureLearn course, please contact the Digital Education Online Learning team first. When you are ready to proceed, you will need to use the Course Initiation Questionnaire (CIQ) process and complete a FutureLearn course proposal form.
