Wayfinding

Accessible approaches to navigation and wayfinding.

NaviLens

NaviLens accessible QR codes help blind and partially sighted people to navigate more easily by making signage more inclusive. These QR codes add a band of coloured blocks around a traditional QR code to enable users of the NaviLens app to scan the code from further away, while moving, and without the need to focus the camera directly on it.

UCL currently has funded 500 codes for use around campus, registered with a specific email address for logging in and accessing the codes.

Preparation steps

In order to access UCL’s bank of accessible QR codes, you must first have access to the navilens@ucl.ac.uk shared mailbox, as this is where the NaviLens login codes are sent. The codes expire quickly, so please ensure you have this mailbox open before trying to log in on the NaviLens website.

If you do not have access, please contact digitalaccessibility@ucl.ac.uk and we will add you to the group.

Create a NaviLens accessible QR code

  1. Navigate to the NaviLens accessible QR codes page

  1. Click “Generate your code”, which will open a new tab with a sign in page

  1. Enter navilens@ucl.ac.uk as the email address, and click “Log in”

  1. A one-time code will be sent to the email address above, along with sign-in instructions

  1. Navigate to the UCL NaviLens mailbox and find your code (which should hopefully be the most recent email!)

  1. Enter the code on the NaviLens website, which should take you to the “My codes” page for UCL (listing codes that have already been used)

  1. Click “Create code”, which will take you to a new page to enter details about your code

  1. Enter the text you would like to be read out loud (by the NaviLens app to the user), and the URL that the code should link to, and change the size of the QR code if you wish

  1. Click “Create code”
