The Digital Skills Development at IOE training programme aims to support students and staff in the use of emerging technologies to create digitally literate education practitioners and professionals.

Training & Development

Courses

The Digital Skills Development at IOE training programme is organised termly and is published just before the beginning of each term. Booking are open to all UCL students and staff. All training session take place at the Institute of Education building. 20 Bedford Way, London WC1H 0AL. Please see map location.

Course Details and Bookings

Types of Courses

  • MINI DEMONSTRATION SESSIONS. These are 30-45 minute overview or taster sessions covering a broad range of software applications and tools. Courses offered usually include a look at: social media, digital notes books, Prezi, screencasting tools, web tools, MacIntosh based sessions and various tips and tricks sessions.
  • HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS. These provide a more in depth look at an application or feature and include a look at social media tools, digital notebooks, blogging tools, iPad apps, interactive whiteboards, Office 2016 applications for Mac users, Keynote, EndNote, XMind, Prezi and some Office 2013 application. Workshops range from 1 hour to 2.5 hours.
Course Bookings

All Digital Skills Development at IOE training courses should be booked using the online course booking system which can be accessed via the link provided below:

Notes and guidance for the online booking system

  • Bookings are open to all current UCL students and staff.
  • In the course description take note of the first line which clarifies the type of course, i.e. a mini demo session, a hands-on workshop, or whether it is for staff only.
  • You will be asked to provide your full name and email address. Please enter your email address carefully as it will be used to contact you if the course needs to be cancelled or moved to another room. It is possible for you to change your email address in the booking system at a later date (see next point).
  • Once you have booked a place on a course you will receive a confirmation email containing all the course details and also a link which takes you back into the booking system and straight to your personal booking page. From this page you can edit your email address (Attendee tab), cancel your place on the course (Options tab), view all your other bookings (Other Bookings tab), check the room location (Location tab) or download any available document (Document tab).
  • If a course is full when you try to book you will be offered a place on the course waiting list. If a place becomes available, the people on the list will be emailed in order, with a delay between each, until the place is filled.

Online Training Resources

LinkedIn-Learning

LinkedIn-Learning offers 6,000+ video based training courses in a wide range of subjects. Software, technology, education, Elearning, data analysis, coding, personal, career, business-management and creative skills are covered. New courses are continually being added. It has many excellent features including playlists, course bookmarks, video position bookmarks, speed control, exercise files, note taking, certificates of completion etc. Staff are encouraged to create playlists to share with students or their colleagues. Your UCL user id is required for access. More details and a link to the login page are available from UCL ISD LinkedIn-Learning.

Purchase of Microsoft Software at Discount Prices

All staff and students are entitled to purchase Microsoft software at discount. Further details are available on our IT Equipment & Software page.

Software Guides

Resources on our Moodle Course

Guides and course materials supporting our training courses are available from our Moodle course "Digital Skills Development at IOE - Resources". Access to the course is by self-enrolment. The guides and materials in the Moodle course can be access before, during and after the training sessions. Anyone who is interested but not booked for a training session is welcome to use any of the resources too.

Further software guides are available for you to download from this page. These guides have previously supported the Microsoft Office and Office 365 training courses. Most of these are still relevant to the Office 2016 versions.

Further Opportunities for Staff

Tailored Sessions for UCL IOE Staff

Tailored training sessions for small groups of staff can be arranged on request. These customised sessions may either draw upon an existing training session, or a particular area/feature of Office or other useful application or tool which will help a team or department to collaborate and become more efficient in their work.

Examples of recent sessions include: Pivot Tables and VLookup in Excel, email mail merges, Outlook calendars and jazzing up PowerPoint presentations. 

These sessions are currently open to UCL Institute of Education staff only. To arrange a session contact IOE.IT Training.

One-to-One Clinic Sessions for UCL IOE Staff

Are you struggling with a particular feature in Word, Excel or web tool?

Would you like some 'just in time' training to help you solve a problem you are having with a feature, or do you want some ideas on how to automate a process to help you work more efficiently? Have you recently completed an online training courses (for example, Lynda.com) and wish to have a follow-up session with a member of IT Services staff?

You can now book one-to-one appointments with the IT Trainer at a time to suit you.

Examples of features recently covered include: mail merges, tables of content, headers in sections, animating objects in PowerPoint and collaborating with Google Docs.

Opportunities for all UCL staff

Staff who do not qualify for the opportunities above may wish to attend one of ISD training team "drop-in sessions" available during term time. For more information see UCL Drop In sessions.

More Training Opportunities with ISD

Further training is offered by the UCL Information Services Division digital skills development programme. Course available included a look at: SPSS, Stats, Matlab, Python, UNIX, web authoring and various Office 2013 skills. Drop in sessions and access to course materials are also available.
