Opening a website in IE mode with Microsoft Edge

This guide explains how to open a website in IE mode with Microsoft Edge

This guide is aimed at:

  • All UCL users

Instructions

Most websites should work automatically in Microsoft Edge but if you are attempting to access a site with previously required Internet Explorer you may need to enable Internet Explorer mode within Edge. ISD hosted UCL sites that require this will automatically load in IE mode on Desktop@UCL but you can also manually activate IE mode if required.

If you are not using Desktop@UCL you will first need to enable IE mode. If you are using Desktop@UCL you can skip to step 3.

1. Click on the ellipsis (…) in the top right and select Settings

2. Select Default Browser on the left and then Allow and click on the Restart button

3. Once Edge has restarted you can reload the currently open webpage in IE Mode via the ellipsis (…) menu in the top right and selecting Reload in Internet Explorer mode

4. A small Internet Explorer icon will display in the address bar to show that IE mode is active:

Note that this only activates IE mode for that specific website and tab. If you open a new tab or navigate to another website it will automatically exit IE mode.
