Learn to add a file in Drupal.

Before you start 

When editing use Chrome, Firefox or Safari but NOT Internet Explorer

Anti-virus scanning

We have enabled anti-virus scanning at the point of file upload. If you get a message saying your file is not able to be uploaded as it may contain a virus please contact web-support@ucl.ac.uk

Instructions

There are two ways to add a file (pdf, Word etc.) to a web page:

  1. Upload a new file to Drupal and insert it
  2. Find an existing file in the website's Library on Drupal and insert it

Upload a new file to Drupal and insert it

Step 1 - how to add a new file to the Drupal Library from your computer

  1. Click on the Media browser icon

  2. Click on Choose File
  3. Click on Upload
  4. Click on Next
  5. Leave the Options as 'default'
  6. Click on Submit
    The file is now available in the Library

Step 2 - how to add the file to the page

  1. Go to the page where you want to show the file
  2. Decide how you want the link to appear:
    1. If you want to link to existing text, select the text first and go to step 3
    2. If there is no existing text, the actual file name will become the link text!
  3. Click on the add media icon
  4. Click on the Library tab and from the 'Type' drop-down menu, choose 'document'
  5. Click on 'Apply'
  6. Once the file has been selected, click on Submit
  7. The file text with a link to the file and an icon representing the file type (e.g. pdf, docx etc.) will now appear on the page. 
  8. Save
  9. Finally, check you are happy with the result, including on a mobile device


Find an existing file in the website's Library on Drupal and insert it

  1. Go to the page where you want to add the file
  2. Place your cursor where you want to show the file
  3. Click on the add media icon
  4. Click on the Library tab and from the 'Type' drop-down menu, choose 'document'
  5. Click on 'Apply' once the file has been selected
  6. Click on Submit - The file should now be visible on the page
  7. Save
  8. If you need to put the page in the menu, check the instructions for putting a page in the website's menu
  9. Finally, check you are happy with the result, including on a mobile device
