Courses leading to College of Optometrists qualifications 

Professional development is an essential part of an optometrist's career path and can be a valuable networking opportunity. Our blended learning courses are designed around the needs of professional optometrists and lead to College of Optometrists professional qualifications. Whilst the majority of each of our Optometry courses is delivered online, they also include face-to-face study days at the Institute of Ophthalmology in central London.

College of Optometrists, Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology

Medical Retina Level 1 (Professional Certificate)

This certificate provides community and hospital based optometrists with knowledge of common medical retina conditions and includes topics covering screening, referral and treatment pathways, with an emphasis on optical coherence tomography (OCT) interpretation and diabetic retinopathy grading.

College of Optometrists, Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology

Glaucoma Level 1 (Professional Certificate)

This training programme is designed to prepare optometrists to participate in formal ‘referral refinement’ and ocular hypertension (OHT)/suspect Chronic Open Angle Glaucoma (COAG) monitoring schemes. It is intended to ensure the currency of core competencies (including those required for pathways involving ‘repeat measures’) and provide additional specialist knowledge and skills for monitoring patients with diagnosed OHT and suspect COAG with an established management plan.

College of Optometrists, Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology

Glaucoma Level 2 (Higher Certificate)

This course leads to a level two College of Optometrists professional higher certificate qualification. The programme provides optometrists with the skills to confidently diagnose ocular hypertension (OHT) and to make preliminary diagnoses of chronic open angle glaucoma (COAG) without supervision. It further develops skills in detecting change and decision-making in at risk patients.

College of Optometrists, Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology

Glaucoma Level 3 (Diploma)

This course is for optometrists who already hold the higher certificate in glaucoma and leads to a level three College of Optometrists diploma in glaucoma. The programme prepares optometrists to participate in community or hospital-based schemes for the management of patients with established COAG and other cases of glaucoma deemed suitable for management by optometrists e.g. treated angle closure, pseudo exfoliative glaucoma.

Contact Lenses Level 1 (Higher Certificate)

This course leads to a level two College of Optometrists professional higher certificate qualification. It prepares students in the development of a detailed knowledge of contact lens design, fitting of rigid gas permeable contact lenses (RGPs), fitting patients with regular and irregular astigmatism and dealing with presbyopia. The programme further develops skills in detecting change in clinical status and decision-making in patients wishing to wear or wearing contact lenses.

Courses offered by Moorfields Education

The following short courses for optometrists are offered by Moorfields Education. These practical, hand-on courses are led by leading Moorfields ophthalmic consultants and specialist optometrists.

Dry Eye Course

This course is a full day intensive programme on the diagnosis and management of dry eye. It is aimed at optometrists who wish to develop their knowledge and skills set when faced with patients that have dry eye. The course includes educational lectures and workshops on lacrimal syringing and punctum plugs enabling the practitioner to manage marginal to more severe cases of dry eye as well as increasing their skill set.

Glaucoma Refresher Day 

A one day event where practitioners can refresh their knowledge in key areas of glaucoma diagnostics as well as attend lectures of emerging technology and practice in glaucoma. This course is aimed at nonmedical professionals and is an enjoyable day for those who practice in glaucoma.

Gonioscopy and Therapeutics

This course takes place over two to three days and would appeal to optometrists interested in, are working towards or have a therapeutics or MECS qualification. Day 1: Gonioscopy, which is delivered through lectures and workshops. Days 2 and/or 3: Therapeutics, which includes lectures and peer review sessions on the therapeutic management of ocular conditions. Leading ophthalmologists teach both courses at Moorfields and delegates have the option to attend one, two or all three days.

Ocular Imaging

This course is a two-day programme which will focus on anterior and posterior segment ocular imaging. Leading consultant ophthalmologists and specialist optometrists will deliver it in the field with an opportunity to familiarise with the latest imaging technology. Key topics include anterior segment OCT, posterior segment OCT, confocal microscopy and specular microscopy, corneal topography and tomography, ultrasound and optic nerve head imaging in glaucoma. The course will be delivered through educational lectures and workshops.

Refraction Course for Ophthalmologists

This intensive course is designed for ophthalmologists preparing for their RCOphth Certificate of Refraction (CoR). It is led by senior hospital optometrists with extensive experience in performing and teaching refraction. It includes two days of lectures and workshops and an optional third day of mock exams. The Mock OSCE day is conducted and consists of the official 12 station exam as set by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and delegates will benefit from individual feedback.

Referral Refinement

A three-day intensive course on referral refinement that is aimed at optometrists who wish to develop their knowledge on referral criteria; when and how urgently to refer patients onwards to secondary care. The course covers every aspect of ocular referrals and includes interactive lectures on the referral criteria of ocular conditions and is delivered by consultant ophthalmologists in each field of ophthalmology.
