Courses

Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision

The course is designed to introduce those delegates unfamiliar with ophthalmology to the basic structure of the visual system including inherited and acquired defects on the first day to ensure everyone can fully benefit and participate in this course. Over the subsequent three days, a variety of educational techniques including lectures, interactive workshops and practical demonstrations, will be used to cover the course material.

The course will be of value to clinicians and medics who wish to practice in the field and expand their knowledge; to scientists and other paramedics who have an interest in clinical vision science; and to technicians working in ophthalmological or neurological electrodiagnostic units.

Design Thinking for Ophthalmology

This course aims at bridging the gap between clinicians and engineers when approaching complex problems, and to show how an engineering approach can enhance the path to a successful outcome in ophthalmology.

The two-day course is aimed at ophthalmologists interested in experimental research, who would like to understand and apply engineering concepts in their own studies. This interactive course will teach you basic engineering concepts of the eye as well as common pitfalls to avoid when using engineering tools for your research. Skills such as handling large data sets, image processing and analysis, and 3D printing will be taught. You will have the opportunity to prototype your own eye model, and apply design thinking to ocular problems in the laboratory.

World leaders in the ophthalmic and engineering communities will deliver exciting talks on the latest discoveries, ranging from medical devices and artificial intelligence through to imaging techniques.

The Macula Course

The five-day Macula Course has been running successfully over 30 years, started by Professor Alan Bird. Considered the premier retina course in Europe, participants attend from all over the world to study all aspects of retinal disease, taught by experts from Moorfields and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. We also work with sponsors to deliver a bespoke state of the art programme tailoring the sessions and presentations to the specific needs of the audience, usually over two days. We have recently organised it for professionals from Italy, UAE, Dubai, and Egypt coming to Moorfields and have held it off-site in Greece. With an emphasis on interactive teaching, workshops have also been included to share best practice, especially around the management of patients with complex disease and co-morbidity. Each course covers the latest developments in the field of medical and surgical retina, including the most recent clinical and scientific research. Courses can be designed with a greater focus on inherited retinal disease, oncology, uveitis, and other inflammatory eye diseases upon request.

Ophthalmic Accident & Emergency (A&E)

The course will consist of a mixture of academic lectures and numerous interactive case presentations. These will be delivered by Moorfields consultant staff who care for patients in the Accident & Emergency Department. The course aims to ensure that all clinical staff who attend the course will acquire the skills needed to manage common and serious eye problems in a practical way. The course is aimed at ophthalmologists and other clinical staff involved in assessing patients with acute ophthalmic problems.
