1. Why did you choose to apply to this programme?

As an Optometrist looking to develop my career in the hospital eye service, this programme is a unique opportunity to learn skills to complement my work in extended role ophthalmology clinics. The combination of clinical, leadership and research modules taught on this course, offers allied healthcare professionals working in eye clinics the variety to explore and specialise in a chosen field. Learning through the Moorfields Eye Hospital – UCL Institute of Ophthalmology partnership is a chance to experience novel, inspiring teaching, and training from some world leaders in eye care.

2. What have you enjoyed most about the programme so far?

I have really enjoyed learning new practical skills like gonioscopy and cranial nerve examination and being able to use these in clinics to help the patients I care for. I have enjoyed the challenge of balancing studies with full time work and feel this has influenced my confidence and skill in my role.

3. How do you balance the workload of the apprenticeship?

Keeping a diary has really helped me to stay on top of study deadlines.

Setting aside dedicated study time and carefully pacing myself through course content each week has helped me to stay on schedule. I would recommend taking up a hobby like swimming, arts and crafts or whatever takes your fancy to rest, recharge and stay focused on your goals!

4. What would be your top tip for incoming students?

Keep faith in yourself, encourage, work with, and support your peers. It is a challenging opportunity but one that I feel will help you to learn and grow into a well-rounded clinician.

5. What are your future career goals and how has this programme helped with your career development? 

As well as gaining clinical knowledge, this programme provides training in research and leadership, which I feel really adds value to the scope for future practice. I look forward to being able to apply this learning into future roles in healthcare, where I hope to be able to teach, carry out research, influence care pathways, as well as innovate and lead change within the healthcare system.
