UCL and Moorfields Eye Hospital have developed a new degree apprenticeship programme to meet the growing global demand for ophthalmic care. As a degree apprenticeship, the programme is delivered in conjunction with eligible UK employers.
This exciting new master's degree apprenticeship programme has been developed by practising clinicians and will allow you to develop an understanding of clinical care in the context of the latest ophthalmic research and treatments. Teaching faculty will include a dynamic group of clinical experts and world-renowned researchers in the field.
The programme is aimed primarily at non-medical professionals seeking formal postgraduate training in advanced clinical practice in ophthalmology.
You will undertake modules to the value of 180 credits, consisting of four compulsory modules:
- Clinical Leadership
- Research Methods and Statistics
- Project Report
- End Point Assessment
Note: You must have evidence of having done Level 1 modules before Level 2. You may also choose to mix different subject areas at different levels in one academic year.
You can also take any of the following 15 or 30 credit optional modules:
- Glaucoma Level 1
- Glaucoma Level 2
- Glaucoma Level 3
- Medical Retina Level 1
- Medical Retina Level 2 (from September 2020)
- Medical Contact Lenses Level 1
- Medical Contact Lenses Level 2
- Cataract (from September 2020)
An upper second-class UK BSc (Hons) in Optometry, Orthoptics or Nursing. Applicants with other non-medical professional qualifications and work experience will also be considered on an individual basis. Applicants must apply in conjunction with their employer.
Programme learning and teaching
The programme will be delivered via blended learning which consists of an online component (distance learning) and face-to-face days. The face-to-face component will include interactive lectures, videos and webinars with assignments.
Contact time includes a 1-week induction at the beginning of the first semester in Year One. Subsequently, there will be 3-week blocks at the end of the second and third semesters for face-to-face teaching and assessments respectively.
