Prof Carandini joined UCL in 2007 as Professor of Visual Neuroscience in the Institute of Ophthalmology. He also leads the Cortical Processing Laboratory (Cortexlab) together which Prof Kenneth Harris. The work of the Cortexlab is focused on understanding how the brain processes sensory signals and integrates them with internal signals to guide decision and action.

Prof Carandini will play a key role in shaping the Faculty’s research strategy and will work with Faculty leadership and the Office of the Vice Provost (Research) to ensure the alignment of Faculty and UCL objectives. He is an internationally renowned collaborative research and his notable achievements include a leading role in the development of the Neuropixel Collaboration.

Speaking of the appoitnment, Prof Carandini said: "I am honored by this appointment and look forward to helping the Faculty of Brain Sciences maintain and exceed its considerable strengths in research, in collaboration with other Faculties within our School and beyond. I am passionate about research, and my own research has benefited from two main forces: scientific collaboration and technological innovation. Different kinds of research, however, are likely to have diverse needs, and I look forward to learning from my colleagues about their suggestions to further strengthen and secure our research output."

He takes over this role from Prof Gill Bates (UCL Institute of Neurology) who championed early career and PhD student support in the Faculty. Prof Bates also made major contributions not only to the Faculty but to the School of Life and Medical Sciences in identifying and implementing improvements.

We wish him the best of luck as he drives forward the Faculty’s research agenda.
