8/10/2015 at 2pm: SLMS Introduction to Information Governance

08 October 2015, 2:00 pm–3:30 pm

Event Information

This event will provide clear guidance on information governance responsibilities and control, how these affect research activities and how the SLMS Information Governance Framework can help researchers meet their legal obligations.

UCL staff and students who handle sensitive personal data are eligible to attend.

Attendance at this event together with successful completion of an online assessment (‘SLMS Information Governance - Assessment of Understanding’) will count towards your information governance training needs under the SLMS IG Framework. On passing the assessment, a certificate will be issued and your training recorded on the SLMS IG training register.

Please note: This training does not cover NHS Trust information governance obligations.

Important Booking Information

  • In order to undertake the training you must have a UCL computer account as this is required to access the assessment.
  • Please ensure that you are available to complete the online assessment within two weeks of attending the training event. (The assessment should take no longer than ½ hour to complete)

Background

The protocols for handling identifiable data are tightening... Researchers should be aware that they must comply with the eight principles of the Data Protection Act 1998. The Act requires appropriate information security to be in place to protect sensitive personal data. A contravention of the data protection principles can result in a penalty of up to £500,000.

As a recipient of healthcare information UCL SLMS has particular obligations to assure external organisations supplying this data and ultimately the research subjects themselves. This assurance process is known as information governance. The SLMS IG Framework controls and monitors how personal data is handled for UCL SLMS healthcare research, enforcing standards based on the current legislation. The standards required by the SLMS IG Framework will ensure that UCL SLMS retains its reputation as a world class health research organisation. Indeed, providing evidence of good information governance is key to the research application process and will become more crucial in the future.
