NIHR Moorfields Biomedical Research Centre (BRC): Advancing vision research and driving equity through innovation

Now in our fourth five-year term, our centre remains committed to leading innovation in vision research. We have continued to bridge discoveries in basic medical research and clinical application, advancing treatments and outcomes in eye health.

Cross Innovation Hub and Clinical Academic Forum: Fostering Collaboration and Knowledge Exchange
Our Cross Innovation Hub initiatives have prioritised collaboration, with quarterly meetings featuring inspiring speakers and fostering stronger partnerships between our two sites. The Hub has become a space for exchanging ideas and strengthening community ties, advancing our mission through shared knowledge and innovation. We have also supported our ophthalmology clinical academic trainees through a dedicated Forum, providing mentorship and peer connection to boost the next generation of clinical researchers.
Expanding Research and Clinical Capacity
Our research infrastructure has grown significantly, highlighted by the relocation of the HERCULES Diagnostic Hub within Brent Cross shopping centre to a larger, permanent retail space. This state-of-the-art facility has enhanced our capacity for glaucoma diagnosis by 70%, bringing high-quality eye care to more people than ever. Our BRC supported the research activities in project HERCULES, including leadership, digital expertise, and patient and public involvement.
Commitment to Patient and Public Involvement (PPI)
Our Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) strategy ensures our research addresses diverse patient needs and reflects community priorities. Our patient advisory groups have been instrumental in guiding our approach, focusing on topics such as reaching underrepresented populations, ethical handling of patient data, and effective impact measurement. To celebrate and gather insights from our patient contributors, we hosted an Open Day featuring firsthand accounts, updates on research priorities in eye health, and open discussions on enhancing our PPIE approach.

Engaging the Public through Innovative Outreach

Our BRC engagement team has introduced several successful public initiatives. At the Pint of Science festival, researchers presented insights into the causes of eye conditions to the public. Additionally, at the Bloomsbury Festival, we hosted family-centred activities and featured our Research Opportunities at Moorfields (ROAM) team on a local radio programme. Our collaboration with the Esme’s Umbrella charity for an Information Day in Manchester increased national awareness of Charles Bonnet Syndrome, reaching audiences across the UK.
Supporting Progress in Eye Health
The BRC remains dedicated to advancing eye health through ongoing research, innovation, and community involvement.
