Why did you choose to study your programme and what made you choose the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology?
Studying neurosurgery at graduate level is something I was keen to pursue. I chose this programme not only because of the opportunity to conduct original research and develop strong academic foundations but also to learn more about neurosurgery. The blend of lectures from world-leading experts, cutting-edge simulations for complex procedures and the networking opportunities really drew me to UCL.
The fact that the world’s first neurosurgeon worked here makes me incredibly grateful to be studying at such an impressive historical institution. With the neurosurgical team being at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its clinical applications, it is a privilege to be a part of the team today.
What do enjoy most about your programme?
The world-class teaching is a cornerstone of this programme. Key surgical concepts are taught by expert neurosurgeons, who also introduce us to ongoing research and advancements in their respective fields. Practical simulations with anatomically accurate benchtop models was my highlight. Getting hands-on experience helps solidify my understanding of key anatomical relationships, which has helped me orientate myself when observing in the operating room.
The flexibility of the programme allows us to take the degree in whichever direction we prefer, which is facilitated by highly motivated clinicians that are willing to support new ideas.
What impact has receiving the scholarship had for you?
The funding received went towards the tuition fees for the course. Without this support from the IoN, I may not have been able to study at UCL. I am incredibly thankful for this scholarship as it has allowed me to grow clinically, professionally and socially.
What advice would give prospective students thinking of studying at the Queen Square Institute of Neurology?
I would urge any student interested in the neurosciences to apply to UCL. With clinicians and scientists that are true authorities in their respective fields, there is a wide variety of research topics, meaning that there is something for everyone. A Master’s programme at the Queen Square Institute is a natural step in the professional development of a clinician or scientist.
UCL has a plethora of CV-enhancing opportunities outside of your main research project, so you can really get the most out of your time here. A fast-paced environment like London is the perfect place to foster life-long friendships and professional connections.
What are your plans for the future once you have completed your degree?
Having done my undergraduate studies in Medicine, I will be working in the NHS, with intentions of applying for a national training number in neurosurgery in the UK. Using the skills I have developed over the course of this programme, I wish to continue conducting research throughout my career, working as an academic neurosurgeon to benefit patients directly with surgical treatments as well as contributing to the wider research community, benefitting patients that I may never meet.
The knowledge I have gained over this year will be a significant contributor towards academic success, as I have come to understand the challenges that underpin translating research into improving patients’ lives.
Is there anything else you would like to say about your time at the Queen Square Institute of Neurology?
Studying here has been a truly enriching and worthwhile experience. I intend to use the skills I have gained to benefit patients battling neurological disease, and I would urge any potential applicant to choose UCL if they share such ambitions. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the IoN for this scholarship award, it has really helped and motivated me to contribute to the vibrant and productive community at UCL.
