This suite of courses is aimed at multiple professional groups involved (or aspiring to be involved) in stroke care and clinical research and will be of great benefit to doctors (including trainees in relevant specialities including neurology, geriatrics, cardiology, etc.); those in allied professions such as Nursing, Therapies (eg Speech and Language therapy, Occupational Health, Physiotherapy) and Psychology; or those with a degree in a health sciences related subject.
It provides comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the causes, pathophysiology, and treatment of stroke, and of the healthcare delivery systems relevant to modern stroke care.
Modules include teaching on the delivery of thrombolysis, neuroimaging, stroke epidemiology, rehabilitation and genetics. The teaching is delivered in a variety of methods including lectures, workshops, on line learning and journal clubs. In addition to the listed modules there is also critical appraisal teaching.
The curriculum is aligned with the principles of the UCL connected curriculum which is designed to provide an integrated approach between research and education to foster critical thinking and research skills.
Learning activities in addition to lectures are :
- opportunity to undertake short clinical observation - attend some clinics at NHNN (with the agreement of the consultant in charge) and on the hyperacute unit
- workshops - patient experience, cognitive rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation, neuroimaging
This is delivered in the setting of Queen Square and the vibrant stroke research group at UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology. We also have input from the UCLP Centre for Rehabilitation which carries out cutting edge research in stroke recovery.
