Portfolio Development Groups

The contract for the Office of the National Director for Dementia Research ended on 30 September 2021.

The Dementia Portfolio Development Group actively supports the development of studies through identifying research gaps and establishing writing groups to develop new research proposals:

The Dementias Portfolio Development Group (PDG) and the Parkinson's Disease Portfolio Development Group's overarching mission is to promote the development of innovative ideas into funded research. Both PDGs are comprised of experienced researchers from diverse disciplines and lay members from within either the dementias or Parkinson's Disease field. The remit, structure and governance of the PDG broadly includes identifying research gaps and supporting writing groups to formulate and prepare grant applications for clinical studies and health and social care research in and outside NHS settings.

The PDGs meet twice yearly face to face, with additional subgroups and working parties established as required. Writing groups are time-limited groups for researchers who wish to collaborate to take a research idea with the potential to advance clinical understanding of dementia in the UK into a submitted grant proposal. Support offered includes practical advice and expertise about patient involvement and study design, as well as logistic support for writing group meetings.

The Office of the National Director for Dementia Research coordinates the meetings and writing groups in alignment with the Clinical Research Network, funded by the NIHR and medical research charities (Alzheimer's Research UK and the Alzheimer's Society for the Dementias Group, and Cure Parkinson's Trust and Parkinson's UK for the PD Group).
